The iconic Independence Cup of 1998 that was played among India, Pakistan and Bangladesh is still remembered in the history as one of the most exciting tournaments with record-smashing figures all around.

The Independence Cup signified Bangladesh’s silver jubilee as a free nation and was organized on the country ground itself.

The Matches

A total of six matches were played among the three participating nations in which Indian team emerged as winners after defeating Pakistan in two of the three finals and Bangladesh in the initial three matches.

The Indian team was captained by Mohammad Azharuddin with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Javagal Srinath leading the forefront of the Indian victory.


Sachin Tendulkar’s Records

Sachin Tendulkar gave an all-round performance to pave the way for India’s win in all the matches. The top-order batsman scored a total of 258 runs in 5 innings with a whopping average of 51.60. He later went on to become the player of series in the tournament.

Sachin Tendulkar in the 2nd match of the tournament against Pakistan claimed the world record for most number of catches (4) in an ODI match and also took a wicket in the same match. His contribution towards 5 dismissals of the opponent team helped India cut short the Pakistani chase by 18 runs.

The second milestone record registered by Sachin in the 1st final again against Pakistan was to become the youngest international player to reach 6,000 runs in ODIs. He was 24 years and 265 days old when he achieved this feat. He scored almost a ton with 95 runs of 78 balls in the same match.

Tournament Highlight

In the last Final against Pakistan, India managed to chase down the mammoth score of 314 runs set by Pakistan by hitting 316 in just 48 overs. This was a world record of the highest successful chase by any team in the cricketing history. It is still remembered as one of the most glorious wins by India in a series of Pakistan and India vs Bangladesh Live broadcast matches.
